Description:
ALS : Autograph Letter Signed
More, Hannah. Autograph Letter Signed, requesting that recipient forward a letter to Mr. Leigh Richmond. 1 pg. More suffered chronically poor health, which was brought on by the sudden death of her sister, Martha, who collaborated on some of More's writing and helped her in the establishment of her schools. She also discusses her work, Moral Sketches.
She mentions her ill health, "still bad, but its the will of God. I have kept my room more than six months. ".."Pray does the new Edition of "Moral Sketches," with the character of the King in the new Preface sell at all. The distracted state of the public view is very unfavorable to reading. "
Moral Sketches of Prevailing Opinions and Manners, Foreign and Domestic was first published in 1819, and went through five editions in the first year. In the meantime, More's sister Martha had died and left More in a completely inconsolable state, greatly debilitating her health. Believing she would likely soon die as well, her Editor asked More to produce a new Preface to the Sixth Edition of Moral Sketches, with an obituary for the King George III, who died in January 1820. After several entreaties, More did so. But rather than dying as expected, she slowly regained her health and by the time of this letter is anxious for news of the new Edition. More's correspondence is held by major institutions, including the British Library, Cambridge University Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
